It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ronald Ewing on October 10, 2026 at the age of 76. Ron died in the city of Sherbrooke, the same city in which he was born. Ron‘s roots in the Eastern Townships were deep: although he travelled with family to many farflung corners of the world, he loved best the land where he was raised and educated, where he worked as a public elementary and high school teacher, as union leader for the Eastern Townships Association of Teachers, as principal of DES and ADS schools, and where he taught both at Bishop‘s University and Université de Sherbrooke after receiving his PhD in Comparative Canadian Literature at the latter. It was also in the Eastern Townships that Ron met his lifelong love of almost 50 years, witnessed the joyful birth of their three children and experienced their subsequent growth to adulthood in a log home in the woods of Ulverton where Ron resided for almost 40 years.
Ron was predeceased by his mother Jeanne Poulin, his father Maurice Ewing, his sisters Greta and Carole, and his brother-in-law Norm.
Ron leaves to mourn his cherished wife Theresa; his precious children Ted (Violaine), Tessa (Gabriel), and Laura Rose (Tanveer); the grandchildren he adored (Éloise, Madeleine, Nihaal, Arthur and Jules); his dear brother Denis (Denise); his special sister-in-law Lorna (Abe); his kind brothers-in-law Hilton (Wanda) and Anthony (Bernadette); and an abundance of wonderful nieces and nephews. Ron loved his family deeply and was demonstrative with his love. He will forever be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
The family wish to thank all those staff members at the CHUS Fleurimont who were outstanding in the delivery of care; in particular, we would like to express our immense gratitude to Dre Marie-Élaine Plante, a doctor of the highest calibre who was exemplary with her efficiency as well as extraordinarily kind.
We will be holding an informal Celebration of Life for Ron on Saturday, November 7, 2026 at the Moulin À Laine D’Ulverton located at 210 Chemin Porter in Ulverton. Family, friends, neighbours and colleagues are all welcome to stop by anytime between 14:00 and 16:30. There will be a medley of oral and musical tributes beginning mid afternoon.
Ron was passionate about the preservation of wild spaces and places. If you would like to honour his memory, please consider planting a tree in a corner of the world you hold dear or making a donation to an organization devoted to protecting the natural world.
